Sunday, February 8, 2009—A while back we proposed that our readers let us know where in Kittery we ought to be distributing the Gazette. So far, we have received a total of three suggestions, from one reader. First, we’ll list those suggestions, then we’ll announce a change designed to get more response. Here’s the list as it stands: Chef’s Cove Cafe (formerly the Crooked Lane), Golden Harvest, and Starbucks at the outlet. Our thanks to Chip for sending those in. Save Our Bridge?

Friday, February 6, 2009—We heard a hint that there might be some citizens hereabouts who want to save Memorial Bridge, home to the bronze eagle shown here. The officials in charge of such things seem ready to spend eighteen months and two million dollars studying the bridge, with an eye to scrapping it. New Paper’s Out

Friday, January 30, 2009—Just a quick update: Today’s paper is on its way to the Post Office, and being distributed here in town and in the surrounding towns of the mighty Piscataqua. We had even more fun that usual with this issue, what with it being Regime Change time and all that. Also, our paper of January 16 is now available on the Free Downloads of our 2009 Papers page. Sunday, January 25, 2009—Some time ago we had a volunteer who distributed the Gazette to a number of place in Kittery. Sadly, his work took him elsewhere. At present we have one stalwart friend who brings copies every fortnight to the Rice Library, but that’s it. It’s a shame, particularly now that the Memorial Bridge is suddenly on the “Expendable” list. So, we want to expand—or rebuild—our distribution in Kittery. We could sit here and arbitrarily work up a list of places to put the paper. But we had what we think is a better idea: let our readers in Kittery use the “comment” feature …

Put Down That Shovel!

Thursday, January 22, 2009—Jill Lepore has an ambiguous but lovely piece in the latest New Yorker called “Back Issues: The day the newspaper died.” She seems not to take a predictive position on the format’s future, but it’s gratifying to see such a vivid picture of the newspaper’s place in the fight for liberty. All the more so because we get a mention. Ms. Lepore quotes Daniel Fowle’s issue of this paper dated October 31, 1765, which “lamented its own demise.” And she cites his coverage of the mock funeral of Liberty held here in Portsmouth the next day. “In the eighteenth century,” Lepore writes, …
